Anti-dam group questions Hetch Hetchy water
Kelly Zito, Chronicle Staff Writer
Environmentalists battling San Francisco's use of Hetch Hetchy Valley as the city's main drinking water cache are taking a new tack - raising questions about the water's quality in light of higher-than-normal rates of certain parasitic infections.
But officials with the city's water and public health agencies insist that the water is safe and that the group's alarms have a political goal.
The source of debate lies miles away among the rocks and fissures of Yosemite National Park. Hetch Hetchy Valley, once a rich landscape of meadows and trees, was submerged in 1923 after San Francisco won its controversial bid, with congressional approval, to create a stable water supply and built O'Shaughnessy Dam on the Tuolumne River.
Cluster of small earthquakes hits Mammoth Lakes area
July 22, 2010 | 8:26 am
Several small earthquakes hit the Mammoth Lakes area Thursday morning, but there were no reports of damage of injury.
The strongest of the temblors registered magnitude 3.8 and occurred at 4:40 a.m. near Toms Place, which is south of Mammoth Lakes along Highway 395.
That quake was followed by more than a dozen smaller aftershocks.
Most of the aftershocks also occurred in the Toms Place area. A few were centered in Mammoth Lakes, and one was centered to the north in Lee Vining.
The main quake was felt in Mammoth, Yosemite and surrounding areas, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
If you are looking for a great escape from the heat head on up To Tenaya Lake on Hwy 120 east the Tioga Pass Road. Located about 8 mile west of Tuolumne Meadows this beautiful Alpine Lake is surrounded by domes and mountains. The east end has a white sand beach and the water is surprisingly warm. You can swim for quite a long time and the kids will love playing in the sand.
This photo was taken with HDHero water proof camera while swimming out in the lake and you are looking at Tenaya Peak that rises several thousand feet above the lake

Eugene couple files lawsuit over tree felled in Yosemite
By Karen McCowan
The Register-Guard
Appeared in print: Wednesday, Jul 21, 2010
A Eugene couple has filed a lawsuit against Yosemite National Park over injuries they say they suffered when a park worker felled a tree onto a highway, crushing their car.
The suit says no warning signs were posted on Sept. 16, 2008, when Lisa Thorpe drove her Honda CRV along Tioga Pass Road with her partner, David Stone, in the passenger seat.
It alleges that park employee Jared Brown was felling trees nearby, cutting one in a way that caused another tree to fall “suddenly and unexpectedly into the roadway, smashing the car.”
Thorpe suffered serious and painful injuries, some of which are permanent, the suit alleges. Among them was a spinal cord fracture that required having a protective “halo” medical device implanted in her skull for a year.

Three New Fires - Two are Lightning Caused Fires
Two lightning caused fires were discovered yesterday, July 19, 2010, on the north rim of the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne River. Smoke was reported visible from the east near the Waterwheel Fall area. Yosemite received lightning late last week and into the past weekend along the Sierra crest. It is not unusual to find these fires a few days after thunderstorms.
