Yosemite Daily Photo, Control burn in Foresta escapes containment lines, 4/2/13

They have been clearing thick brush in Foresta and burning the piles. This one was left over night and escaped its line and started to burn a nearby tree but since it is so early in the season it wouldnt have really spread. Luckily some folks in a house nearby called it in and ran over and put it out.

April 2013 Snow Survey Results

April 2013 Snow Survey Results
Results for the April snow survey show that the Merced River basin snowpack is at 53% of average while the Tuolumne River basin is at 52% of average for this time of year. Last year, the Merced was at 47% while the Tuolumne was at 43%, but the distribution of snow is much different this year. Last year, the snowpack was fairly consistently about 45% of average at all surveyed elevations. This year, the snowpack is about 70% of average down to around 8,000 feet, but drops off substantially below that. So, those early-June high-elevation backpacking trips that might have been possible last year will probably be much snowier this year.

County Upset Over Yosemite Plan

http://www.mymotherlode.com/news/local/2038864/County-Upset-Over-Yosemit...

Sonora, CA -- A debate continues regarding Yosemite National Park's controversial Merced River Plan.

Today the Tuolumne County Supervisors voiced out against proposals included in the plan, and voted 5-0 to send a letter in opposition regarding the park's preferred alternative. The NPS proposal calls for the removal of the Sugar Pine Bridge, Yosemite Lodge swimming pool, bike rentals, day horseback rides, the ice rink, and many services currently available at the Merced Lake High Sierra Camp. It is in an effort to return Yosemite closer to its native state, and increase environmental protections.

NEW AND HAPPENING TODAY

Wawona Northwest Prescribed Fire Postponed
Due to recent rainfall, the Wawona Northwest Prescribed Fire in Yosemite National Park has been rescheduled and will now tentatively begin next week on Tuesday, April 9. This date may change again, however, based on weather conditions. Smoke will still be visible in the project area before the prescribed fire is ignited because park fire crews will use the opportunity of the wet weather to burn piles of cut vegetation within the burn unit. This will contribute to the goal of reducing fuel to protect the community of Wawona and will also serve as a smoke management technique by reducing emissions from the larger prescribed fire. Pile burning will also take place at several other locations throughout the park.
For more information about the upcoming burn near Wawona, contact Jennifer Chapman at 415-464-5133 or jennifer_chapman@nps.gov. (J. Chapman)

There is less snow this year compared to last year and last year was a really bad snow year.

Normally NPS starts plowing the Glacier Point and Tioga Roads around April 15th but rumors are flying that they may not start until May due to the budget. It wont really matter this year as in several weeks the Glacier Point Road will be pretty much melted out.

Prescribed Fire Scheduled in Yosemite National Park: Burn is Scheduled to Create Defensible Space in Wawona - news release
Media Contacts:
Scott Gediman 209-372-0248
Kari Cobb 209-372-0529

Yosemite National Park Fire Managers are planning a prescribed fire in the southern portion of the park. The burn will start on Thursday, April 4, 2013 or later, and is dependent on weather conditions. Specifically, the burn area is located near the community of Wawona. The total prescribed burn area will include 150 acres. The prescribed area is at the optimal fuel moisture level to successfully complete the project. This will be the first prescribed burn of the 2013 fire season.

Yosemite Daily Report:

LOW rainfall totals for Yosemite and Mariposa from 1/13 to 2/29/13

According to the National weather service Yosemite Valley received 18.5 inches of rain in December of 2012 but  received less than 1" between January and February of 2013.

The period between 1/1/13 to 2/30/13 is one of the driest on record. The March 1st Yosemite snow survey put the snowpack at 68% but I think Aprils report will come in much lower after seeing how little snow there was on the Glacier Point Road and in the High Country when viewed from glacier Point last week.

Wawona Northwest Prescribed Fire Scheduled for April 2, 2013

Wawona Northwest Prescribed Fire Scheduled for April 2, 2013

Yosemite National Park fire managers are tentatively planning to begin burning the 150 acre Wawona
Northwest Segment B Prescribed Fire on April 2, 2013. However, this date may change due to weather
conditions. Ignition will take 2 – 4 days and active burn down will last 1 – 2 weeks.

The primary objective is to reduce hazardous fuels within the mixed conifer forest adjacent to the Wildland
Urban Interface (WUI) community of Wawona at the south end of Yosemite. This project creates a large
continuous area of reduced fuel by linking together multiple previous fires and treatments including the 2007
and 2008 Wawona Northwest prescribed fires, the 2007 Jack wildfire which was caused by lightning, and a
series of mechanical vegetation thinning projects in the 2000’s.
