WEATHER


Yosemite Valley


Today: A 40 percent chance of showers before 11am. Partly sunny, with a

high near 51. Calm wind becoming west southwest around 6 mph.

Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 33. West southwest wind at 7 mph

becoming east.

Tuesday: A 20 percent chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 53.

HAPPENING TODAY


Short Hwy 140 Delays

Road Crews will be clearing ditches and sweeping HWY 140 from the Old Dam

down to Parkline. Starting Monday March 14-16 expect short delays traffic

Tree work continues in Wawona with the NPS crew in the neighborhoods and

contractors along PG&E power lines and at the Wawona Hotel. Green trees

being cut were uncorrectibly damaging historic buildings, had severe

construction damage to roots, or major stem cracks.(B.Mattos-03/14/11)


CONSTRUCTION UPDATE


El Portal Road/Big Oak Flat Road Intersection Sewerline Repairs

Project starts March 8 and will be complete by May 27, 2011. Expect

intermittent five-minute delays with one lane of traffic. However, be

prepared for 15-minute delays. The small parking lot at the intersection

will be closed. Most of the work will occur in the parking lot adjacent to

Yosemite National Park Announces Merced River Plan Spring Workshops

Public Encouraged to Participate in Important Park Planning Effort


Yosemite National Park is currently working on the Comprehensive Management

Plan for the Merced Wild and Scenic River (MRP).  This plan will provide

the framework for management decisions regarding the Merced River and the

Merced River Corridor in Yosemite National Park.  The park contains 81

miles of the Merced River, a federally designated Wild and Scenic River.


Public participation in the planning effort is vitally important.  The park

will be conducting six workshops this spring concerning various aspects of

the plan.  These workshops are designed to inform visitors and elicit

feedback about management issues necessary to complete the Merced River

Plan.  Each spring workshop will focus on a different and unique management

concern that directly relates to the Merced River.  The public is highly

encouraged to attend all of these important workshops.


Spring meetings on the Merced River Plan will occur on the following dates:

People entering the park to attend a workshop will have the entrance fee

waived.  These people should inform the Park Ranger at the entrance station

that they are entering the park to attend the workshop.

The safety topic for the week of March 14 is SPE ( Severity Probability

Exposure) and GAR  (Green Amber Red)   Oh no more acronyms but these tools

can help all of us stay safe on a  daily basis by making smart decisions.

EOC Hosts Julia Parker as Women’s History Month Speaker on March 15--NPS

cultural interpreter Julia Parker will speak noon-1 p.m. March 15 on “One

Indian Woman’s Story” in the Valley Auditorium as part of an EOC Women’s

History Month presentation that is open to the public. Julia, who grew up

outside of Yosemite, married Ralph Parker, the grandson of Yosemite weaver

Lucy Telles, in 1948. She learned basketmaking skills from her

grandmother-in-law and has passed those skills onto her daughters and

granddaughter. Julia’s baskets combine features from several groups:

Western Mono, Miwok, and Pomo. She presented Queen Elizabeth II of Great

Britain with a twined basket when the queen visited Yosemite Valley in

1983. Hear Julia describe her journey in Yosemite as a park cultural

interpreter. Note: Plan also to attend author Fernando Peñalosa’s

presentation for Women’s History Month Speaker from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. March

28 on Yosemite ranger-naturalist Enid Michael and historian Shirley

Rogers is on a detail as the Acting Regional Archivist (PWR). If you have

COMMUNITY NEWS


Dinner with Dean Potter-- World-renowned climber Dean Potter will share and

discuss exclusive footage of his climbing adventures on Friday, March 18,

at the Curry Village Pavilion in Yosemite Valley.  The event, which begins

at 5:30 pm, includes dinner and will benefit local Yosemite schools. The

event is $15.00 for adults and $5.00 for children.

us tonight to share the diverse and rich experiences of living in a remote

African village.  Matt spent two years in northern Malawi working with

farmers and their families to develop programs in bee-keeping, fish

farming, and fruit tree production. Matt will share a taste of real Malawi

village life, along with all the mega-fauna, beautiful landscapes, and

flora associated with the warm heart of Africa and its neighbors. We hope

Storytelling in Yosemite this Sunday

March 13, in the Park Service Auditorium, six nationally recognized

Storytellers will be performing.  The Yosemite performance, begins at 2:30,

and costs either $14 or $10 (seniors and youth). This is the Grande finale

for Mariposa's 24 th Storytelling Festival. The event also includes public

performances at the Mariposa High School on Friday and Saturday.  For
