HAPPENING TODAY
Forum Lecture Series today--There will be a Yosemite Forum Lecture series,
today 1 from noon to 1pm in the Valley Auditorium. Paul Doherty, UC
Merced Ph.D. Candidate, will be presenting
"The Application of Geographic Information Science to Search and Rescue at
Yosemite."
PARK AND PARTNER NEWS
Yosemite Staff.
First, let me thank you for your public service and dedicated care for
Yosemite NP. From my perspective, park staff have done an exceptional job
keeping the park open and assisting park visitors over the course of the
winter.
As a park goal, we are trying to ensure excellence in supervision,
management and leadership here at Yosemite. Towards this end, in early
November, Yosemite's Extended Leadership Team (the park's 46 branch chiefs
and senior supervisors) began a four part leadership academy, the second
segment will be in early April. This April session titled, "Leading
People," focuses on the development of advanced interpersonal skills that
are often required in the workplace. Emphasis will be placed on working
effectively with both individuals and on teams.
As part of this academy, the entire Yosemite Management Team will be
conducting an OPM Leadership 360 assessment. The OPM Leadership 360
assessment is designed to measure how a person is doing in relationship to
the 28 core competencies of leadership. The OPM Leadership 360 assessment
helps a person gain valuable information about "who they are and how you
are showing up in the world." For many decades, this type of feedback has
greatly assisted leaders in making choices and changes regarding behavior.
The assessment is intended to spur understanding of self growth and
improvement as desired. About four years ago, I completed this 360
assessment and found it to be an extremely valuable tool to guide
self-improvement and develop leadership skills.
By now, some of you may have been asked to provide feedback for a colleague
or supervisor in the form of an on-line survey. Let me assure you, the OPM
Leadership 360 assessment, the results, and the feedback are anonymous. OPM
only administers the 360 assessment for developmental purposes - no one
from NPS will be given individual feedback report results. The assessment
opened on Feb 28 and will close promptly on March 18. If you have been
asked to complete this survey on behalf someone, we would greatly
appreciate if you please do so.
I want to thank you for taking the time to provide such valuable feedback
to other park staff and welcome you to contact me if you have concerns.

Continuing Resolution Update
As most of you probably have heard, the Congress has passed (both House and
Senate) a new Continuing Resolution to fund fiscal year 2011 until March 18
(see story below). This is very good news for Yosemite National Park
staff, park partners, gateway communities, and visitors. Based on my
experience, we will see several continuing resolutions over the next month
until a full FY11 bill is completed.
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Senate has passed, by a vote of 91 to 9, H.J.
Res. 44, a Continuing Resolution (CR) to fund the federal government
through March 18, 2011. The legislation will now go to the President for
his expected signature.
We will keep you updated as the situation continues to unfold over the next
few weeks. (D. Neubacher - 3/3)

Student Employee Network Established
Are you a student employee of the National Park Service? Do you have questions and concerns about student employment? Are you interested in
networking with other students? Do you have new ideas for ways things could be done around the workplace? These questions have inspired the creation
of a Student Employee Network for the National Park Service. Student leaders would love to hear what you think. Offered by and for students and
supported by the NPS Workplace Enrichment Program, the network will provide a forum for students to share ideas, ask questions, discover training
opportunities and develop strong professional relationships. Depending on future student leadership, the network could grow to offer even more.
In its early stages, the network needs student input. All student employees are asked to fill out a brief, anonymous survey. Career or
career-conditional employees who have recently been converted from a student position, or who are otherwise interested in student employee
development, are also invited to complete the survey. Results will guide development of the network and help student leaders set goals for the
future. Students curious about possible leadership roles are also asked to share their interest.
Already available is an online forum for student employees on InsideNPS. So far, almost 2000 views have hit that site! There is also an internal
student webpage with resources for students and interns, available through InsideNPS. Please go to the Workplace Enrichment website on InsideNPS to
access the online forum, get more information, or take the survey. The weblink is http://inside.nps.gov/waso/
Stay connected with all the Workplace Enrichment efforts by checking the WE website often at http://inside.nps.gov/WE or follow us on twitter
(WENPS) and Facebook (NPSWorkplaceEnrichment).
