Yosemite's clean air, enjoy the next couple of days as a control burn is planned for next week
Yosemite plans controlled burn near Crane Flat
Yosemite National Park officials are planning a controlled fire in the western portion of the park near Crane Flat early next week.
Officials expect the prescribed burn, which includes 200 acres, to last two to three days. Yosemite has been preparing for the burn for several years by thinning vegetation along roadsides and igniting burn piles in the area.
The burn should reduce vegetation that can act as fuel for wildfires near the park boundary, the Rockefeller Grove of sugar pines and structures in the Crane Flat area.
Smoke from the burn may be visible throughout the park, but will be more evident in Foresta, El Portal and the Hodgdon Meadow area.
Fire engines, water tenders and fire crews from Yosemite National Park and the U.S. Forest Service will be present during all fire activity. It is the first prescribed fire of the 2010 fire season.
The burn is dependent upon weather conditions. Temperatures over the scheduled burn dates are predicted to be in the mid-70s.
