Yosemite Smoke Alert 7/28/11
There is a huge fire, 16,350 acres and growing, down south in Sequoia Nat Forest that is blanketing the Yosemite area in heavy smoke. Yosemite Valley up to Tuolumne Meadows are covered in smoke from this fire. Reports say the east side of the Sierra, the Mono Lake area on Hwy 395 is even worse.
It is likely that this fire will continue to burn for some time as it is a managed fire as it was caused by lightning.
SEQUOIA NATIONAL FOREST, Calif. (AP) — Federal forest managers say a 16,350-acre fire in the Sequoia National Forest is being managed as an ecological burn to reduce old woodlands debris in an effort to help guard against future wildfires.
National Forest Spokeswoman Denise Alonzo told the Visalia Times-Delta that the fire is in the back country where there are no roads or designated campgrounds.
Smoke from what is being called the Lion Fire can be seen from the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada, and firefighters began containment work on Tuesday.
The fire was ignited by lightning on July 8, and as of Wednesday was 10-percent contained.
