WEATHER

Winter Storm Warning
The National Weather Service in Hanford has issued a Winter Storm Warning
above 5000 feet for heavy snow and strong winds, which is in effect from
4pm Friday to 4am PST Monday for the southern Sierra Nevada from Yosemite
to Kings Canyon. Snow accumulations: 2 to 4 feet. The heaviest snowfall
will occur above 7000 feet around Yosemite. Snow level will fluctuate
between 4000 to 5000 feet over the weekend. Timing: occasional heavy snow
will develop Friday night and continue through Saturday night. There will
be a short break in the precipitation Sunday morning. Another heavy burst
of snow will develop Sunday afternoon and continue through Sunday night.
Winds: southwest winds with occasional gusts to 75 mph in the Sierra
backcountry and near the crest. Strong winds will cause significant blowing
and drifting snow.

Yosemite Valley
Today: A chance of rain after 10am. Snow level 5400 feet. Cloudy, with a
high near 40. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of
less than a tenth of an inch possible.
Tonight: Rain and snow. Snow level 5200 feet. Low around 29. Chance of
precipitation is 100%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.
Saturday: Rain. Snow level 5300 feet. High near 37. Chance of precipitation
is 100%. New precipitation amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.
Sunday: Snow. High near 37. South wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as
20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2
inches possible.

Winter Weather Advisory
A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 4pm Thursday for the southern Sierra Nevada from Yosemite to Kings Canyon. Three or four inches of snow possible on the Yosemite Valley floor and six to eight inches over the higher elevations. Rain and higher elevation snow will begin by daybreak today, changing into mainly snow by midday. Snow showers will continue through the evening, then scattered snow showers overnight into early Thursday.

Special weather statement
Periods of wet and windy weather expected through the weekend.
Two storm systems in the eastern Pacific will bring episodes of rain and gusty winds to much of the central California interior Thursday night and Friday, and again Sunday. The next storm will bring precipitation into Merced and Mariposa County late Thursday night.... The heaviest precipitation will fall in the foothills and higher elevations of the Sierra from Fresno County northward where an inch or more of rain is likely.... Snow levels will remain high through Sunday with snow accumulations of 6 to 10 inches above 9000 feet. Storm number three will arrive Saturday night into Sunday and bring more substantial rain, with heavy snow accumulations in the southern Sierra Nevada above 9000 feet. These storms could bring minor flooding in areas of poor drainage this weekend with the possibility of mud slides or debris flows in the foothills and higher elevations of the Sierra.

Unsettled Weather Expected this Weekend
A series of weather disturbances will move across the region starting tonight into Friday and continuing through the weekend. Snow levels will be relatively high through the event and snow accumulations are expected to be 3 to 7 inches with the first system through Saturday with near 1 foot at the highest elevations near Yosemite National Park. Possibly another 2 to 4 inches of new snow will fall, with near 7 inches at the higher elevations, with the second system later on Sunday. Snow levels will start out around 7500 feet and remain steady through Saturday before lowering to 6500 feet on Sunday as the system moves out.

National Weather Service Special Weather Statement
A secondary cold front will move southward across the central California interior today accompanied by showers over the mountains and a slight chance of showers in much of the San Joaquin Valley. Wet weather is likely in the wake of this second cold front Friday with the possibility of wintry travel over the higher elevations. Snow levels will lower to 2500 feet in the Sierra foothills and 3500 feet in the Kern County mountains by late Friday. Snow accumulations of 4 to 6 inches are likely in the higher elevations of the Sierra by Friday night, especially north of Kings Canyon National Park.
