Includes a little blurb on Yosemite and crowd control about limiting the number of folks in the park. This is what the Yosemite locals have been saying for Years!!! Buses are NOT the answer.
------------------------------------------------
Crowd control
And the crowds must be dealt with.
The park is considering the potential for a surge in visitors over the next two decades, when an additional 2 million people flocking from Front Range cities are projected to visit annually, Baker said.
“At what point do you say enough is enough?” he said. “In some areas (other parks) have limited access to a particular part of the park because of the fragility of the resources. We haven’t come to that here yet. We haven’t established a threshold.”
He said Yosemite National Park is considering a limit to the number of cars allowed in Yosemite Valley to prevent uncontrolled numbers of tourists from harming park resources.

Yosemite Badger Pass Ski Area is open every day conditions permitting. Lifts run 9am to 4pm, call 209 379 8430
"The popular Badger Lift at the resort has been completely replaced," said Colin Baldock, area manager at Badger Pass. "The new lift construction that was completed this summer includes all new towers, drive terminal, return terminal machine house, operator house and chairs."
The Glacier Point Road has been repaved up to the Badger Pass entrance and throughout the ski area's parking lots. And from the intersection of Wawona Road at Chinquapin up to Badger Pass, all of the turnouts have also been paved with curbs added. Additional projects improving the ski area include the repainting of the Eagle Lift, which was rebuilt last year, and the replacement of its top operator house.

Yosemite rangers search for missing Modesto man
YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif.—Rangers are hiking trails in Yosemite Valley looking for a Modesto man who has been missing in the park for more than two weeks.
Thirty-one-year-old Anthony Clifton Green Jr. was last seen in Yosemite National Park on Nov. 6.
Rangers discovered he was missing over the weekend, after finding his abandoned vehicle had been damaged by a bear in a parking lot near the Happy Isles trailhead.
Family members say they don't know what Green was doing in the park, or whether he was traveling with others.
Rangers have yet to find any sign of him along the Mist Trail, which leads to Vernal and Nevada Falls.

Regents approve UC Merced's Yosemite station for system
UC Merced said the University of California Board of Regents approved a request to include UC Merced's Yosemite Field Station as part of the UC Natural Reserve System (NRS).
The station, which is part of UC Merced's Sierra Nevada Research Institute (SNRI), is located inside Yosemite National Park in the historic village of Wawona. The designation gives UC Merced its first natural reserve site.
"The addition of the Yosemite Field Station to the UC Natural Reserve signifies our strong commitment as a campus, and as part of the UC system, to develop a sustainable presence in the central Sierra Nevada," said Roger Bales, director of the Sierra Nevada Research Institute. "Being a part of the NRS will strengthen UC research to this critically important region."
Opened in 2006, the Yosemite Field Station provides research access to multiple habitats in the central and southern Sierra. The facility includes classroom, office and work space, and overnight accommodations for as many as 30 people.

The clouds have moved in with gusty winds blowing all the remaining leaves out of the trees. The forecast is for a storm to move through later today and tonight with some rain and snow down to 5,000'. We may even wake up to a dusting of snow in Yosemite Valley on Saturday morning.
If you are heading up this way be ready for chain controls on the roads and this looks like it for the Tioga Pass and Glacier Point roads. They are currently closed and if it snows more they are probably closed for the winter.

Yosemite Merced Wild and Scenic River Plan Scoping in El Portal, 11/30/09
Dear Residents and Friends of El Portal & Yosemite,
Please plan to attend an NPS Scoping Session:
* Monday, November 30th.
* 6:30-8:30pm
* Clark Community Hall, El Portal
As you are probably aware, the NPS is under a court order to complete a brand new Merced Wild and Scenic River Plan by December 2012. As a major consideration for the plan will be land uses along the Merced River both in Yosemite, and in the El Portal Administrative Site. This plan will therefore have a major impact on the El Portal Community.
Please know that this scoping session is just the beginning of a 3-year planning process. Many of you might be suffering from "planning fatigue" after the last 20+ years, but this MRP just might be the plan that finally sticks. The future of El Portal will be directed by this plan, and so your input is essential!
We hope to see you on November 30th!

A very nice hike this time of year is on the Foresta Road which drops down from the small town of Foresta on Hwy 120. You drive into Foresta about 3 miles to the end of the paved road and you can then hike on a old road down through forest, past a large meadow and to Foresta Falls about 1 mile down. Further down are more waterfalls and the 2nd photo shows a old gold mining area about 3 miles down.
If you were to follow this road down it ends up in El Portal on Hwy 140. This is also a great mountain bike ride up or down.

Update 11/13/09
This photo was sent to me and is supposedly the way the moon will look on 11/28/09 in Yosemite Valley rising in the exact same spot that Ansel Adams photographed it in 1960.
Get your cameras out. The last time this happened in 2005 at a Glacier Point location there were over 200 photographers at the location Ansel took his.
The Ansel Adams Gallery is predicating that the moon will rise in the exact same spot again as when Ansel photographed it on 11/28/60. They are offering a special class. I am not sure which photo they are refering to? Any body know?
"On Saturday, November 28th the class will have the opportunity to photograph the moon rising over Half Dome in the same phase and position, and with the same shadows as Ansel had in December of 1960. "

Yesterdays short snow storm dumped several inches of fresh snow above 7,000 feet and a trace down to 5,000'. Today was clear and the sun melted most of the snow down low but it was still hanging in the trees and on the cliffs up high.
The Tioga Pass and Glacier Point Roads are closed. If it stays nice they may reopen but with more storms forecast for later next week this could be it for the winter.
Today's photo is from Hwy 120 looking east towards Yosemite Valley and you can see the snow up high on the rim of the valley and on Sentinel Dome.

Yosemite: For all or just for a few wealthy people?
By Mark V. Thornton
Is Yosemite a trophy to be captured by special interests or a “crown jewel” to be protected on behalf of the American public?
The Yosemite Valley Plan was forced through by the Clinton administration as a lasting legacy for certain quasi-environmental groups based in Washington, D.C. It was Secretary of Interior Bruce Babbitt, in a speech to the Commonwealth Club, who stated he would “organize a mob and threaten to lynch anyone” who opposed that plan.
Unfortunately, the National Park Service got caught in violation of environmental laws and had to suspend the Yosemite Valley Plan while it went about preparing a management plan for the Merced River Wild and Scenic corridor.
The problem is the park service warped the Merced River Plan to fit the goals of the already completed valley plan, which was designed to accomplish the elimination of traditional family- based auto touring, decrease the number of traditional family- friendly camp sites, and increase high-rent hotel accommodations that cater to well-heeled tourists.

Yosemite National Park, CA – November 2009 – Legendary rock climber Royal Robbins, whose many daring exploits include the world’s first ascent of Yosemite’s famous Half Dome Face in 1957, will appear for a book signing at the Curry Village Mountain Shop in Yosemite Valley from 4pm to 5pm on Saturday, November 14. “To Be Brave,” the first volume of Robbins’ autobiography, traces his life from the streets of 1940s Los Angeles, to the rock faces he climbed and preserved.
Robbins invented his own form of rock climbing. His technique was environmentally friendly, personally challenging and today would be described as an ‘extreme sport.’ The rock faces he climbed were preserved and not scarred by pitons and bolts that were typically used by climbers.
|
| Today, Robbins is a legend in climbing circles, and with good reason. “To Be Brave” reaches a crescendo when Robbins finds himself dangling treacherously high from the West Face of the Leaning Tower in Yosemite. There was no Sherpa Tenzing around to assist Robbins. This was a lone adventurer facing the most daunting of personal challenges, cheating death, and grappling with his innermost demons. When Robbins topped out in May, 1963, he became the first person to solo a Yosemite big wall, spending nearly four days alone on the wall, while exposed to stormy weather.
In the book’s Foreward, noted climber and author Steve Roper states, “His Leaning Tower exploit, explored at length in this volume, stand forever as the boldest solo climb of early North American climbing.” Robbins went on to climb many more mountains, all in his unique way, quietly and forever changing the ethic of climbing worldwide.
