Yosemite, CA -- The Half Dome overlook in Yosemite National Park has recently received an $800,000 redesign and rehabilitation.

Park Ranger Scott Gediman says the overlook on Big Oak Flat Rd. is the first real view of Yosemite Valley for residents using the Hwy 120 entrance.

Rather than having to park a vehicle along a dirt road, visitors can now enter a well organized parking area and follow new pedestrian walkways to the overlook.

Paths now meet accessibility standards and new exhibits help educate visitors about the park. The project also included the rehabilitation of paths that had eroded due to overuse.

The rehabilitation project was funded by the non-profit Yosemite Fund.

Settlement blocks construction projects at Yosemite pending new plan

Associated Press YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, —

Environmentalists and park managers have reached a settlement that blocks all planned construction projects in Yosemite Valley until the park writes a new plan that won't threaten the fragile ecosystem. Environmental groups sued the federal government in 2000, claiming the National Park Service's plans to remodel the valley would jeopardize the federally protected Merced River.

The river runs alongside famous granite monoliths and dramatic waterfalls. The settlement announced today means the park service will have to hold off on repairing roads and sewer systems and upgrading hotel rooms on the valley floor until at least December 2012. That's when the park is expected to finalize a plan to manage and protect the river.

Rock fall reported near Yosemite's Curry Village

Campers and staff at Yosemite National Park woke to the rumblings of a small rock fall this morning in the Curry Village area.

The rock fall, which occurred between 5 and 7 a.m., consisted of about 150 tons of rock and was contained to an area of about 55 cubic meters, and didn't spread beyond the talus slope, the area of rock fragments at the base of a cliff, according to Yosemite spokeswoman Kari Cobb.

No injuries or damages were reported.

The rock slide occurred behind the area known as New Housing, a collection of employee homes near the guest cabins. A large dust cloud wafted over the area, but the rocks didn't reach into the inhabited areas, according to Yosemite employee Rosemary Regello.

An October 2008 rock slide in the same area closed part of Curry Village. A rock slide last month temporarily closed Yosemite's Ahwanee hotel.

  10. All services in Tuolumne close today and SNOW on Tuesday?

Well it has been another great summer in Yosemite and now fall is getting ready to set in. The Dogwoods in Yosemite Valley have a slight tinge of red and orange on them as they sense winter coming (this may be a little early?).

Up in Yosemite's high country on Hwy 120, the Tioga Pass Road, all services will be closing today at 5pm for the season as they get ready to pack up all the tents and store everything for the coming snows. Gas will be available by credit card until the road closes, mid November?

Temperatures in Yosemite have been up to 15 degrees above normal with it being very hot, near 100, in Yosemite Valley. Look for that to change starting tomorrow with a BIG cool down coming and possible rain showers. Some are even saying that it may SNOW above 8,500'.

Depending on who you listen to some are saying a return to seasonal temps and clear weather later this next week for a Indian Summer while other are calling for possible unsettled weather this fall.

Hiker does Yosemite triple crown in 14:53

By Marek Warszawski / The Fresno Bee

Troy Kellenberger isn't your ordinary Yosemite hiker. Saturday, the 19-year-old Fresno City College student hiked to the top of Half Dome, El Capitan and Glacier Point -- all in one day.

There's a reason this butt-kicker of a hike -- called the Yosemite Triple Crown -- is seldom done. It's 43 miles long and requires 24,000 feet of elevation change (12,000 going up, 12,000 down).

Most amazingly, Kellenberger finished the linkup in 14 hours, 53 minutes.

"I felt pretty good right after," he said. "Just another day on the trail, I guess."

But what a day. Kellenberger and a friend started up Half Dome via the Mist Trail at midnight Saturday and returned at 4:20 a.m. Another friend accompanied him up El Capitan, which took from 5:50 to 11:10 a.m. At 12:10 p.m., all three started up the Four-Mile Trail to Glacier Point. By 2:53 p.m., Kellenberger was already back down.

Kellenberger said he "speed walked" on the uphill sections and ran the downhills.

"I know I can break 14 hours with a little better planning," he said. "Maybe next year."

  21. Yosemite Big Meadow burn plan released by park

Meadow burn plan released by park
Written by James Damschroder, The Union Democrat September 22, 2009 11:41 am

While Yosemite National Park officials await the results of an investigation into the park’s decision to ignite a 90-acre controlled burn on a hot, August morning in the Foresta area— which quickly escaped its boundaries and turned into a wildfire — park officials have made the prescription burn plan and incident management plan available to the public.

The fire scorched 7,425 acres and closed Big Oak Flat Road into the park for a stretch — leaving businesses in the Groveland area that rely on Yosemite’s summer traffic empty. The cost to extinguish the fire totaled $16.3 million.

Ironically, the acreage burned did not include the meadow the fire was meant to torch in the first place.

While Acting Park Superintendent David Uberuaga has steadfastly supported the decision-making process to light the burn, he’s apologized to area business and home owners who were affected by the blaze.

Uberuaga said that to meet the objectives of the burn — to reduce fuel loads and for meadow restoration in the Foresta area — the day of the burn was within the prescription’s window.

It is that time of year again where we get really hot afternoons and as soon as the shade moves in it substantially cools down. The evenings are quite cool and even down to freezing above 8,000'.

The next couple of days are forecast to be extremely hot with near record temperatures with highs in the 90's in Yosemite Valley and high 70's in Tuolumne Meadows. What is nice is that the heat is short lived as the days are getting shorter and you can always find relief down at the river.

Here are some more shots of the Foresta area after the Big Meadow fire of 8/26/09.

The first photo is looking down on the community of Foresta and all the burned areas around it. Big Meadow is center right and that was the intended target for the prescribed fire that got out of control and as you can see they only burned 10% of their objective.

2nd photo is a burned hillside above Hwy 120 while the 3rd shot is of a sign they have explaining exactly what happened? Maybe one shouldn't play with fire on a hot dry August day.

  26. Squaw Valley Institute presents Yosemite Hetch Hetchy Valley: Remove the Dam?

Squaw Valley Institute presents an interesting look into what would happen to the famous Hetch Hetchy Valley if the O'Shaughnessy dam were removed Thursday, Sept. 24, at the Cedar House Sport Hotel in Truckee.

In 1923, following years of opposition and debate, the City of San Francisco completed O'Shaughnessy Dam, which flooded Hetch Hetchy Valley in California's Yosemite National Park. Today, the future of Hetch Hetchy Valley is still debated.

CALVIN, an economic-engineering optimization model, was used to evaluate the water supply and hydro-power implications of removing O'Shaughnessy Dam. Model results indicate that removing O'Shaughnessy Dam to restore Hetch Hetchy Valley would have little effect on water deliveries if an intertie was developed between the Hetch Hetchy Aqueduct and the much larger New Don Pedro Reservoir downstream. However, restoration of Hetch Hetchy Valley could be complicated in terms of politics, economics and institutional agreements.

This research was presented to the California State Assembly in 2004 prior to Governor Schwarzenegger's state study to review restoration of Hetch Hetchy Valley, and was the basis for Tom Philp's Pulitzer Prize-winning series of editorials in the Sacramento Bee in 2005.

This annual event is organized by the Yosemite Climbing Association to help clean up the park after the long and busy summer season. Volunteers are needed to pick up litter at various locations in Yosemite National Park including on roadways, in the river corridor, on trails, near climbing routes, and in parking, camping, and lodging areas. Events and presentations honoring Yosemite’s climbing history will be held throughout the weekend. Last year, over 2,021 Yosemite Facelift volunteers donated 16,168 hours and collected 41,631 pounds of trash. Interested volunteers should sign up at the booth in font of the Yosemite Valley Visitor Center at 8:00 am on days that they wish to participate. Crew leaders will be at the booth to organize work groups and hand out trash bags, gloves, and litter sticks. Trash must be returned to the booth by 5:00 pm to be weighed and sorted. Volunteers participating in the clean-up will receive free admission to the park. There are limited free camping sites still available for those participating in the clean up.
