  3. Cross Country Skiing on Yosemite's Glacier Point Road

     Today was a warm Blue Bird day and it was no different cross country sking on Yosemite's Glacier Point Road. It was so warm we wore just regular shirts and pants. 

    This is skating past what they call "Clark's View" and is about 6 miles out on the Glacier Pont Road from Badger Pass. This is a great lunch spot with huge vistas of Mt Clark.

  5. Yosemite Valley, 12/30/08

     This is Yosemite Valley at around 2pm today and it has really warmed up. You can see that the snow is melting pretty good in the sunny areas but is still holding in the shade. The roads are starting to clear up and it is mostly snow tires in Yosemite Valley with it R2 in the Badger Pass area.

    Yosemite National Park Announces Public Scoping for the Rehabilitation of
    the Badger Pass Ski Lodge Environmental Assessment
    Yosemite National Park is announcing the public scoping period for the
    Badger Pass Ski Lodge Rehabilitation Environmental Assessment (EA). Public
    scoping comments will be used to assist the park in developing a range of
    reasonable and feasible project alternatives that meet the purpose and
    need, including a no action alternative, and then analyzing the
    environmental effects of each alternative. A 30-day public scoping period
    for this EA will open on January 14, 2009 and will extend through February
    13, 2009. Written comments should be postmarked no later than February 13,
    2009

  9. Yosemite Winter Wonderland 12/26/08

     Today was one of those rare days in Yosemite with tons of new snow and blue skies. There is over a foot of snow in Yosemite Valley and almost 5' at Badger Pass. The weather is supposed to be clear and cold for several days.

    THE WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW AND GUSTY WINDS IS NOW IN EFFECT
    FROM 4 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO 4 PM PST THURSDAY FOR THE
    SOUTHERN SIERRA NEVADA AND TEHACHAPI MOUNTAINS.

    TWO WEATHER SYSTEMS WILL MOVE THROUGH THE REGION TODAY AND CHRISTMAS DAY.
    THE FIRST WILL MOVE SOUTH ALONG THE COAST TODAY SPREADING MAINLY LIGHT SNOW

    Today has snow and rain in Yosemite with the snow level around 5,000' to 6,000'. Badger Pass had excellent powder skiing yesterday and more is on the way.

    THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN HANFORD HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WATCH FOR
    HEAVY SNOW...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM WEDNESDAY
    AFTERNOON THROUGH THURSDAY AFTERNOON FOR THE SOUTHERN SIERRA NEVADA AND
    TEHACHAPI MOUNTAINS.

    TWO WEATHER SYSTEMS WILL MOVE THROUGH THE REGION WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY.
    THE FIRST WILL MOVE SOUTH ALONG THE COAST WEDNESDAY SPREADING RAIN AND SNOW
    INLAND. SNOW LEVELS WILL BE FROM 4000 TO 5000 FEET. A SECOND COLDER SYSTEM
    WILL QUICKLY FOLLOW WEDNESDAY NIGHT AND THURSDAY...WITH THE SNOW LEVEL
    LOWERING TO 2500 TO 3000 FEET. TOTAL SNOWFALLS OF UP TO 2 FEET WILL BE

    PM PST THIS AFTERNOON...FOR THE SOUTHERN SIERRA NEVADA FROM YOSEMITE PARK
    TO THE KERN COUNTY LINE.

    PERIODS OF SNOW WILL CONTINUE TODAY AS A COLD FRONT MOVES SOUTHEAST THROUGH
    CENTRAL CALIFORNIA. THE SNOW LEVEL WILL LOWER TO
    NEAR 4000 FEET AROUND YOSEMITE...TO 5000 FEET IN SEQUOIA PARK. ADDITIONAL
    SNOWFALL OF 10 TO 15 INCHES IS LIKELY FROM 6000 FEET AND HIGHER. GUSTY
    WINDS OVER HIGHER ELEVATIONS WILL CAUSE AREAS OF BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW.

  15. Yosemite 12/22/08

     Today is a beautiful day with white wispy clouds floating around. The chain controls which have been down to El Portal are now lifted up into Yosemite Valley.

  16. Badger Pass Ski Area in Yosemite, 12/21/08

     This was Badger Pass yesterday, 12/21/08, as the rain moved in around noon. Last night it snowed really good and Badger Pass got several inches of new snow.

  17. Cross Country Skiing, Badger Pass Area 12/21/08

     The cross country skiing on the Glacier Point road yesterday was perfect. The groomers had smoothed the nice powder to make for perfect skiing. We started at Badger Pass and went all the way to Bridalveil Creek, about 4 miles. It was not crowded at all and we saw 1 snowshoer and 4 skiers.

    Experience some of the best opportunities to cross country ski in California.     Beginning at Badger Pass there are over 90 miles of marked trails and 25 miles of machine-groomed track. Cross-country track and skating lanes are groomed from Badger Pass to Glacier Point(a 21-mile round trip), and a three-kilometer track is set to the scenic Old Badger Summit.  Don't miss the 3 mile trip to Dewey Point that offers spectacular views of Yosemite Valley.

    Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias, elevation is 5,600'. The road into the grove is closed in the winter and it is about 3 miles into the lower grove on a ungroomed road.

     


    The Crane Falt area is at 6,000' and offers several trails but none are groomed. The Crane Falt lookout offers some great vistas of Yosemite Park.

     

  19. Winter activities

    Winter activities Many of the roads in the park close due to heavy snow in winter; however, Yosemite Valley is open all year long. Downhill skiing is available at the Badger Pass Ski Area—the oldest downhill skiing area in California, offering downhill skiing from mid-December through early April.

    Much of the park is open to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, with several backcountry ski huts open for use. Wilderness permits are required for backcountry overnight ski trips.

  20. Rain in Yosemite

    It started to rain in Yosemite Valley around noon today and the snow level in now quite high, up around 7,000'. This is quite different from last week where the snow level was at 2,000'. The snow is falling off the trees in Yosemite Valley as the snow starts to melt.
